Neon signs shouting about peep shows and sex shops, and a glowing ‘Sex Palace’ enticing passers by, straddle either side of the canal in the Red Light District of Amsterdam, Netherlands.
Yes there are ladies trying to catch your eye in window booths and lots of cafes where you can purchase many legal highs in this liberal city. Even if you don’t fancy dipping into the activities on offer, an evening stroll down this charming cobbled street is an experience not to be missed, and one you won’t find almost anywhere else in the world…well not legally anyway!
There are actually three red light districts in Amsterdam, the main one (pictured) however is very close to Centraal Station. Check out the Condomarie – a kingdom of condoms, visit the sex museum or simply admire the old fashioned architecture of one of the oldest streets in the city.
Top tip for Amsterdam: It’s not all about the red light district! There are so many art galleries and museums to explore; I recommend the Van Gough museum and the Anne Frank House. You can also hire bikes and explore the canal paths – all in all Amsterdam is perfect for a weekend break.
