Viti Levu, Fiji

Fiji waterfall river Viti Levu

This is the view from our motor boat on the Wainubuka river on the main Fijian island of Viti Levu. The sun was not out on this occasion but the beauty of the waterfalls all around us shone through. We boated upstream to a shallow landing point from which to jump into huge rubber rings to go tubing down on the river current – quite hairy in places, and watch out for the shallow bits! It was a bit of a scramble trying to get out of the current but a fantastic thrill all the same. The real highlight of this day however was finding a hidden alcove behind large flat rocks, revealing a secret waterfall with a bottomless pool of fresh water filtering into the river. We spent hours here jumping and diving off the rocks into the pool; this is just how you imagine adventuring in Fiji!

Top tip for Viti Levu: Consider booking onto the Feejee Experience as its a fantastic hop-on hop-off bus service with local guide, and it really does take you off the beaten track to places you would never be able to find on your own. You meet like-minded people, build your own itinerary, go at your own pace, and get a look into Fijian cultural practices such as the kava ceremony in a real village setting, rather than a resort style tourist show.
